Music

I used to write a lot of music, which is how I started studying scores, and eventually realised I had more ideas about existing music than creating it anew - hence the conducting.  However, I still write things from time to time, either from scratch or (more often) arranging and/or orchestrating music.  This has mostly been for fun, I'll admit, but I can happily turn something out if the occasion demands it.

Recent output includes:

-          'Belle of the Ball' by Leroy Anderson, arranged for brass band

-     Fugue 12 (Book I) by J S Bach, transcribed for trombone quartet

-     Fanfare for Brass Trio (Horn, Trumpet, Trombone)

-          The Crystal Spring (Folksong arranged for chamber orchestra)

-          The Taverners (March for brass band)

-          Fanfare for Alto Trombone solo

-          Magnificat & Nunc Dimmittis (SATB with divisi, organ)

Programme Notes

Available to order, as I really enjoy doing them.  I can email files on request to provide a sample of my work, with notes on the following pieces:

-          Bax:  Tintagel

-     Beethoven:  Symphony No. 9

-          Berlioz:  Symphonie Fantastique

-          Dvorak:  Symphonies Nos. 5 & 6

-          Elgar:  Froissart concert overture, Sospiri, Suite No. 1 from The Wand of Youth

-     Ginastera:  Overture to the Creole 'Faust'

-          Sibelius:  Symphony No. 1

-          Verdi:  Grand March & Ballet Music from Aida (Act II finale)

Academic

As with programme notes, these will either be available to download from this page (space permitting) or via email on request.  These pieces include:

-     Orchestral Seating in Modern Performance: Origins & Variations.  My MMus thesis, which also aims to be of relevance and practical use to conductors and players alike

-          A short essay on Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, with regard to performance practice issues arising in relation to the brass writing

Creative

Mostly for my own pleasure, I've written a few various things - limericks, poems, chunks of prose, short sketches and extended scripts, including the infamous Hatstand Trilogy (devised with friends, inspired by our rather eccentric Head of English at school...)
